What Do You Need to Do If There's a Dam on Your Property?

Industrial & Manufacturing Blog

Owning a piece of real estate with a dam may be a new experience for you. You may be unsure about how best to maintain the structure but want to do the right thing so that it remains intact and your land and family stay safe. Use the information below as a guide so that your dam remains intact and effective.

Inspect It Regularly

One of the worst things you can do if you have a dam is to ignore it. While dams are generally sturdy, over time the pressure from and exposure to water can begin to wear on your structure. You'll want to monitor the dam itself for chinks and cracks, but just as importantly, it is vital to monitor the soil along the dam edges. If the soil along the edges becomes compromised, that can be a problem for your dam. Make sure the outlet pipe is not cracked, damaged, or clogged.

If you're able to inspect the dam frequently, that means you'll be able to notice trouble right away. That can allow you more time to get a contractor if you need one.

Keep the Surrounding Area Clear

You'll also need to pay special attention to the grass and land in the general area of your dam. Keep grass mowed and clear out twigs, dead leaves, and other items so that the area around your dam is clear. Debris can attract bacteria, insects, and small mammals to the embankment; the animals might start to burrow into or dig up the ground around your dam, as this might ultimately result in stability problems.

Come Up with a Plan

You might have a vague idea of what you'll have to do if the dam fails, but it is smart to have a detailed, clear plan that will kick in if the dam is somehow breached. Your plan needs to be talked about within your family, and you may want to do dry runs periodically so you can be sure that the plan is well thought out. Details of your plan could include calling the local authorities, meeting in a particular spot, and warning nearby neighbors.

It is vital that you also know exactly when you will enact your plan. Will it be when the water is within a few inches of the top of the dam, for instance? You might not want to wait until water is leaking through the dam before you start to execute your plan; enact the plan with enough time to be sure that your family remains safe.

Follow the advice above in order to better handle things when you have a dam. Get more information from a dam-repair company in your area.
